Sun’s out, plans are piling up, and your social feed is full of beach days, BBQs, and bucket-list trips. Summer is supposed to be the season of joy, but what if it doesn’t feel that way for you?
If summer isn’t feeling as light and carefree as it “should,” you’re not the only one. While it’s often seen as a season of fun and freedom, for many, it brings unexpected stress, pressure to be social, or a lingering sense of missing out. At Mind Unwind Psychotherapy, we understand that summer can stir up complicated emotions—and we’re here to support you in navigating them with care and compassion.
What Is Summer Anxiety?
While most people associate sunshine with happiness, anxiety doesn’t take a vacation. In fact, the pressure to be social, spontaneous, and “fun” can actually increase stress and emotional fatigue. For some, the longer days mean less rest. For others, the shift in routines or changes in work/school schedules can trigger discomfort or even symptoms of depression.
You might notice:
• Feeling guilty for staying in while others go out
• Worrying you’re not doing “enough” with your summer
• Constant comparison to others’ vacations or plans
• Sensory overload from heat, crowds, or social events
• Emotional fatigue from trying to keep up
If that sounds familiar, you might also be experiencing FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
How to Cope with Summer Anxiety and FOMO
You don’t need to “fix” yourself to enjoy summer, you just need space to feel what’s real for you. If the pressure to be everywhere, do everything, or feel a certain way is creeping in, try these simple ways to reconnect with yourself:
• Pause and check in: Ask yourself, Do I actually want to do this, or do I feel like I have to? Giving yourself permission to say no is a form of self-care.
• Put some distance between you and the scroll: Social media has a way of making us feel like we’re always behind. Unfollow, mute, or take a break if it helps. Real life isn’t curated.
• Define what joy looks like for you: It doesn’t have to be parties or plane tickets. Maybe it’s a quiet walk, a solo picnic, or getting lost in a book with your phone on silent.
• Try small grounding rituals: A few minutes of breathing with your hand on your chest. Journaling. Drinking water in the sun. These little things bring your nervous system back to center.
• Talk it out: Whether it’s with a friend, journal, or therapist, naming your feelings helps take the edge off. You’re not too much or not enough—you’re just human, doing your best.
Real Joy Doesn’t Have a Hashtag
There’s no right way to do summer. Your season can be slow, quiet, or different from what others post online—and it’s still valid. If summer feels heavy instead of happy, that’s okay.
